Types Of Fabrication


Fabrication in simple terms defined as the process of making something from raw materials other than readymade products. Well as in structural construction, fabrication is the process of cutting, bending, and moulding steel structures to create beams, columns in order to use it for construction to be good manners. Only the fabrication materials are giving priority to have a perfect and strong construction. Without the fabricated material, no one can use normal materials on construction.

Types Of Fabrication

Majorly there are various types of the fabrication process are involved. A few types of fabrication techniques are listed below in a detailed manner.

  2. Cutting
  3. Extrusion
  4. Stamping
  5. Welding
  6. Casting
  7. Machining
  8. Drawing
  9. Shearing
  10. Folding


Punching is the process of making the holes for the material. Through punching, the making of work is easier and comes into fastening methods through pieces of cutting materials in the form of holes or other shapes of products. The removed materials (through punching) is called “blanking”.


To cut into smaller sections or split pieces of materials into small parts, these cutting is the major process. And from the old days to recent days, cutting is prominent in the fabrication process. The Cutting will be done in various techniques with the saw, plasma torches, water jets, and lasers.


Extrusion is the process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional area making the perfect shape of the material. The main usage of manufacturing processes of extrusion is its ability to create very complex cross-sections and work materials that are brittle. 


Stamping is the process of making the perfect shape of material like Shapes, Letters, Alphabets, Numbers Etc. Stamping is a similar method of punching, but the hole in metals will not be occurred through the stamping process and gives exact shape. Mainly there are two types of stamping process is present, they are Hydraulic Stamping and Metal Stamping. Metal stamping machines cast, punch, cut and shape metal sheets through required shape. Hydraulic Stamping will press the metal until the material gains the shape and will bond the product by the stamping method.


To join two pieces or to combine more pieced to form a single product, these Welding process is done through a combination of pressure and heat. Whether the product is any shape or size, welding will help to join the products to use it again in a proper manner.

Welding having the four types, they are

  • Stick welding or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG), or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
  • Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)


Some of the common metals that are used for casting are steel, magnesium, gold, silver, iron, copper, etc. Casting is also one of the methods in the fabrication process. In Casting, the liquid is first heated and then cooled down to get the required shape of liquid material. Once the liquid is heated, it will gain the strength of the product and it will not lose its capacity after cooling. So the casting process is required in order to get the shape of the Material at any temperature level.


To remove unwanted or waste material from the shaped material, this machining process is done. Then only the correct material which is used in the construction part or for other projects is developed with the perfect material. It might be done on a lathe, where the material rotates on a cutting tool.


Drawing is done when the material has to set in an equalizer position based on their radius. Basically drawing is processed on the metal fabrication to turn sheets of metal into hollow cylindrical or box-shaped vessels.


Shearing process is performed on sheet metal to make a long cut on a piece of metal.


To bent the piece of the material to acquire its structure, folding is done though Brake press, it is useful for forming a crease. Folding can also be held by hammering the metal until it bends, or by using a folding machine. Some parts of the metal require bent, in that time folding is used based on their structure, shape, and size. And gives the correct output after the folding process is completed.
